How to Attract Finches to Your Garden
Many people would like to attract finches to their gardens including the most sought after bird visitor from the finch family, the Yellow Finch. Having a small flock of brightly colored Yellow Finches in your garden would be magical! The male Yellow Finches are yellow with black caps, black wings and tails and a white shoulder patch during the spring and summer months. In the winter they are less brightly colored and resemble the females.

The easiest way to attract finches is to place thistle feeder in your garden. Thistle feeders are designed to hold small thistle or Niger seeds which come from the Niger plant that is native to Ethiopia. When you buy it as wild bird seed it will have been heat treated to prevent germination so you won’t have the problem of thistles growing from any spilled bird seed!

Thistle feeders are constructed to prevent spillage of seeds onto the ground which would attract predators like squirrels and would be unsightly. Many have extra protection to prevent squirrels getting into the food. A typical thistle feeder has a mesh tube to contain the seeds which the small finches can put their heads through to reach the seeds. Finches have small short beaks ideal for eating small seeds. In addition to thistle seeds finches also enjoy sunflower seeds or millet.
